Abstract

Due to the complicated nonlinear and distributed nature of optical power dynamics that arise in optical fibre links, models for such systems tend to be computationally expensive to apply, whether in the context of analysis or control design. As optical fibre links scale in complexity, the need for valid approximation techniques for such models becomes essential. This paper represents an initial step in generating and exploring a variety of approximate models for capturing spatially distributed power transients in Raman amplifier equipped optical fibre links, with a view to application in fibre link control design. ©2009 IEEE.
